26 degrees and sunny. Treated myself to a pair of new skates for my birthday, dropped the kids at school and with camp chair in hand, headed to the park rink in town.
Old knees and hips be damned. Sunshine and the scrape of the ice. No snigger laughs, no embarrassment to be had.
Just me meeting the ice again for the first time in years. And gratefully, my buns did not have the occassion to greet the ice.

Ah. A true winter memory. :) As a kid growing up in eastern WA - it was always a good winter if my grandparents acre pond froze. My grandparents had kept all the skates from my dad, uncles and aunts, and every year they would swap with their friends so that we could all have skates to wear. (There were 11 grand kids at the last pond freeze.)

I've only ever skated inside once. Outside, its so, well zen, maybe is the word. The sound of the blades on the ice, at times not perfect ice, mixing with the sounds of wildlife and wind. It just goes together in my memories. I hope to someday offer this unique experience of winter to my kids. (Granted we might have to hightail it far north *grin*)

Thank you for sharing your winter skating experience. Totally brings back fond memories for me. Happy Holidays.

So glad that you were able to sneak over to the pond and enjoy a blissful night on the ice with friends! It makes me want to see a Sonja Henie movie now!

Whoa! You're brave. We 'sounded' our ice here in Maine, and there's NO WAY any of us will go on it yet. But, I weigh way more than you! It's awesome, isn't it? Glad you got the chance to go again.

I wish I could've been there at your skating party! I haven't been skating in years (I would've been one of the little kids in the indoor rink to watch for--I was terrible), but now I want to try again, in a more natural setting!

Fabulous! I felt like I was right there with you! (and I like I could ice skate! which I can't. Not well, anyway).
Very cool.

How wonderful. I didn't grow up skating (I'm from Berkeley, California), and never put skates on until I lived in the Netherlands as an exchange student at age 17. That year, there was a week of skating weather for the first time in a decade-so I learned to skate on the flooded schoolyard, and then spent a couple of days skating Frisian canals and lakes. I've never forgotten it-can't imagine a more beautiful, exhilarating way to be outdoors.
